Lillie’s love for Cortona
Lillie spent many years in Italy – from her time living in Florence to her year abroad in Cortona with The University of Georgia, USA. The University of Georgia has a significant presence in Cortona, primarily through its esteemed Cortona Studies Abroad Program which gives students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in Italian culture and art through this program. Her personal connection to Cortona meant it was the perfect place to hold her annual Tuscan photography vacation.
Under the Tuscan Sun
Now, you might have heard of Cortona from a little book called “Under the Tuscan Sun”. Frances Mayes’ memoir captivated readers worldwide with its vivid portrayal of life in the Italian countryside. For many Americans, the allure of Cortona stems from this literary connection, as they yearn to experience the same enchanting landscapes and vibrant community depicted in Mayes’ book. From wandering the cobblestone streets to savouring the flavours of Tuscan cuisine, visitors are drawn to Cortona in search of their own slice of Italian paradise. Our photography vacations in Cortona are one of the best ways to see the beautiful town and the surrounding villages and learn to capture them in creative ways.
One of the highlights of our Tuscan photography vacation is the opportunity to see Villa Bramasole, the iconic villa that Mayes and her husband renovated in the film, starring Diane Lane. The villa used to depict Bramasole is called Villa Laura – a beautifully restored 17th-century estate that perfectly captures the beauty of the Tuscan countryside with its stunning architecture and gardens and breathtaking views. It was chosen as the location for “Under the Tuscan Sun” as it was undergoing renovation at the time of filming in 2002/2003 which fit well with the storyline. The three buildings – the Villa, Farmhouse and Limonaia – were all lovingly restored in 2006 after it was used as the set for the film. Now, it’s a luxury accommodation you can stay at!
Fans of the book can really get a glimpse of the real-life setting that inspired Mayes’ story. Exploring Cortona’s charming squares, winding alleyways, and iconic landmarks provides visitors with the chance to revisit unforgettable moments from the film. Whether strolling past Villa Bramasole or enjoying a meal at the quaint cafes seen on screen, experiencing Cortona’s cinematic locations with our Tuscan photography vacation adds an extra layer of magic to the Tuscan journey.

Capturing Flavour: Culinary Delights on a Tuscan Photography Vacation
Food, wine and coffee are an integral part of our photography vacations in Cortona. From savouring hearty Tuscan classics like ribollita soup and bistecca alla fiorentina to sampling locally produced wines, such as Antiori’s Bramasole, every dish and glass is an invitation to explore the flavours of the region. In Italy, olive harvesting usually takes place from late October to early November. Olive oil is a huge part of Italy’s heritage, cuisine and culture. Much of the production of olive oil takes place in Tuscany and we love visiting the beautiful groves on our vacation each year. With our Tuscan photography vacation in late October this year, it’s the perfect time to capture the abundant olive groves, picking, pressing and production – as well as taste the olive oil too! Whether indulging in a leisurely meal after a day of photographing or embarking on a golden-hour wine tasting evening, Cortona offers a culinary scene that perfectly complements the beauty of its landscapes and the creativity of its visitors.
